Article sections
Moodle course completion criteria are defined so that you can control when a course is considered completed (e.g. when all activities have been completed, a certain score has been achieved, or the teacher has marked the course complete).
Here’s how to set up the settings step by step
- Open course settings
- Go to course
- Open Settings
- Set completion tracking on
- In settings go to “Completion tracking”.
- Change “Completion tracking” → “Yes”.
- Save the changes.
- Set activity completion conditions
- Return to the course space and turn editing on.
- Go to the settings of the activity you want (e.g., quiz, assignment, forum).
- Open the “Activity completion” section.
- Choose when the activity is considered completed (e.g., Student must receive a grade, Student must view this activity, etc.).
- Set course completion conditions
- From the course management menu, select Course completion from the More menu.

- In the Course completion view, you will see a list of activities that have activity completion enabled.
- You can define that the course is considered complete when certain activities are completed, or for example, when a student achieves a specific grade.
- From the course management menu, select Course completion from the More menu.
Manual completion by teacher (optional)
- You can also allow the teacher to manually mark the course as complete. This option is available in the same Course completion view.
This way, you can transfer the completion record to the main course’s completion tracking if you are using a sub-course activity to link two course spaces.
