    Analytics in brief

Kaltura analytics helps you understand how videos are used and how they support learning. You can use it to examine, for example, how often videos are opened and played, and how far viewers progress through a video.

Analytics can support lecture design, student guidance and the development of course implementations. Video viewing data can be examined at the level of an individual media item, channel or gallery, as well as by course implementation in the Moodle/Learn environment.

Watch the video introduction to Kaltura analytics (Kaltura Knowledge Center, duration 5:25).

    What does Kaltura analytics show?

Kaltura analytics shows how many times a video page has been opened and the video played, as well as which parts of the video have been watched. For an individual video, you can examine user engagement, viewing behaviour, devices used and geographic location.

Analytics can also be compared across different time periods and filtered, for example, by category or location.

Viewing analytics can be useful when planning flipped learning, monitoring the use of pre-learning materials or evaluating whether a video is an appropriate length and works well for its target audience.

    Video-specific analytics in Kaltura

In the KMS environment (kaltura.hamk.fi), you can view information for an individual video such as the number of video page views, video plays (when a user selects Play) and which parts of the video have been watched.

The analytics tool can also be used to examine viewing trends over different time periods, compare two date ranges and apply various filters. In addition, analytics shows the geographic locations from which users have viewed the video and the types of devices used, such as mobile or desktop devices.

Video-specific analytics is useful for lecture recordings, orientation videos, instructional videos and other content where a certain level of use or viewing completion is expected.

However, it is important to note that when content is viewed without signing in to the service, user-specific information is more limited.

    Analytics in Learn

In Moodle, analytics is particularly useful when you have shared videos with students using Kaltura tools, such as Kaltura Video Resource, Kaltura Media Assignment, the workspace Media Gallery, or by embedding a Kaltura video into another resource or activity using the Kaltura button in the text editor.

With Kaltura analytics in Moodle, you can find out whether students have found and watched a video shared on the course.

This can be useful, for example, when reviewing pre-learning videos used in flipped learning, instructional videos related to assignments or key course recordings where viewing is part of the student’s learning process or assessment.

    Media Gallery analytics

Media Gallery analytics in Moodle provides an overview of how the shared video library of a workspace is being used, including user activity and the most popular videos.

Media Gallery analytics helps you understand whether content is being used consistently, which videos are viewed the most and how actively participants use the course video library.

    How should analytics be interpreted?

Analytics alone does not tell you whether learning has taken place, but it can help identify patterns of use and possible areas for improvement.

If a video is opened frequently but only watched briefly, the content may be too long or poorly structured. On the other hand, if a pre-learning video used in flipped learning has been viewed well before a teaching session, the teacher can be more confident that the planned working method can be continued during the face-to-face session.

Some metrics are estimates, and anonymous users may only appear in analytics in a limited way. Analytics should therefore be used as indicative information to support decision-making.

Use analytics primarily to develop teaching, support students and evaluate how well your own videos work. The greatest benefit comes from focusing on a few metrics that are relevant to your teaching rather than trying to monitor everything at once.
