Kaltura’s Moodle tools in a nutshell

Video material stored in Kaltura can also be used in the Moodle learning environment. A video can be added to a course area as its own resource type, embedded in an activity through the text editor, added to the shared Media Gallery, and used in assignment submissions.

Kaltura’s Moodle tools include:

Publishing and visibility of videos in Moodle

Kaltura Media Space (KMS) at kaltura.hamk.fi and the Kaltura LMS environment in Moodle use the same media library. This means that when you upload a video in either environment, you can also see and use it in the other environment from your own My Media library. In Moodle, videos in My Media are private until you decide to publish them to a course area.

A video is published to a course area either by adding it with the Kaltura button in the text editor or by making it visible as a Kaltura Video Resource. Once published, the video is visible to the course area participants. It is worth noting that if you mark a video as published to a specific Learn course area in My Media, the video becomes visible in the course area’s shared video library, the Media Gallery, even if you have not yet embedded it with the text editor or added it as a separate activity. Media Gallery therefore functions as the course area’s shared video view, while embedding through the text editor and Kaltura Video Resource display the video in a specific location within the course area.

When a student logs in to the course area for the first time, they are automatically granted access to the Kaltura LMS (Moodle) plugin. This enables them to use screen recording tools and save their own videos to the My Media library for further sharing in Moodle. The Kaltura LMS (Moodle) plugin also works for people studying or working at HAMK who, for example due to a temporary account, do not have permission to publish or maintain their own media library in the Kaltura Media Space (KMS) environment at kaltura.hamk.fi.

My Media

My Media can be found in the top bar of the Moodle learning environment. There you can view all the media content you have uploaded to and created in Kaltura, including screen recordings. Content in Moodle’s My Media is private by default until it is published to a course area.

Kaltura Video Resource

Kaltura Video Resource is a resource type used in Moodle that allows a video stored in Kaltura, such as a learning material video, teaching recording, or other media content, to be published in a course area as its own separate resource.

Before publication, the resource is private. After publication, its visibility is restricted to the participants of the course area. Visibility restrictions can be set for a Kaltura Video Resource in the same way as for other Moodle resource types and activities. The same video can also be published from the personal My Media library to other course areas where the teacher has publishing rights. In this case, the video becomes available to the participants of those course areas through the shared Media Gallery library, even if it has not been published within those course areas as a resource type, Kaltura Video Resource, or embedded in another resource type using the Kaltura button in the text editor.

Kaltura in the text editor

Kaltura content can also be added in Moodle using the Kaltura button in the text editor. Media added through the text editor is retrieved from the same personal Kaltura media library, My Media, that is also used in the Kaltura MediaSpace (KMS) environment at kaltura.hamk.fi.

Use the Kaltura button when you want to embed a video as part of other content instead of adding it as a separate resource. A video added through the text editor is well suited for assignment instructions, discussion forum posts, pages, and text-based learning materials. This is a good option when the video supports other content and does not need to form its own separate resource in the course area.

Media Gallery

Media Gallery is the shared media library of a Moodle course area, where Kaltura videos used in the course can be collected. It works as a shared playlist for the course area’s videos, and both teachers and students can add content to it. Content added to Media Gallery is selected from the personal Kaltura media library, My Media.

Use this tool when you want to build a shared video collection in a Moodle course area that teachers and students can use together. Media Gallery is well suited for collecting course video materials in one easily accessible place, making students’ video productions visible, or gathering shared supplementary material. Media Gallery is also useful when you want to view analytics collected from video viewing in the course area.

Uploading a video to Kaltura in Moodle

A video can be uploaded to Kaltura not only in the Kaltura Media Space (KMS) environment at kaltura.hamk.fi, but also directly in Moodle through the personal My Media library. Material uploaded in Moodle and Kaltura MediaSpace at kaltura.hamk.fi share the same personal media library. The shared library makes it possible to publish the same video to different user groups without having to create a copy of the video.

Kaltura videos as assignment submissions

In Moodle, Kaltura videos can be used in assignment submissions in several ways. A video can be submitted through the text editor or as a video link, but the most effective solution for students’ video-based assignment submissions is to use the Kaltura Media Assignment activity. The activity uses students’ personal My Media libraries, where they can upload the video to be submitted as an assignment or complete the assignment as a screen recording using Kaltura Capture or Capture Express tools.

Use this tool when you want students to submit a video as part of a learning assignment. A video submitted through the text editor is suitable for a regular assignment, a link submission works for simple situations, and Kaltura Media Assignment is suitable when video submission is a central part of the assignment. This setup works well for presentations, video blogs, oral reflections, demonstrations, and other learning assignments where students demonstrate their competence through video.
