What is Kaltura?
Kaltura is HAMK’s video platform for uploading, recording, sharing, editing and using video content in teaching and communications. The service is available to HAMK staff and students.
Kaltura can be used both in the browser-based Kaltura MediaSpace (KMS) environment at kaltura.hamk.fi and in the Moodle learning environment, Learn, at learn.hamk.fi.
The same media library is available in both environments
At HAMK, Kaltura MediaSpace (KMS) and the Kaltura LMS environment in Moodle (Learn) use the same personal media library, My Media. In practice, this means that when you upload or record a video in one environment, you will also see it in your My Media library in the other environment.

What should Kaltura be used for?
Use Kaltura when you want to:
- create instructional or tutorial videos
- record activity on your screen and/or webcam video
- share meeting recordings
- add videos to a Moodle workspace
- ask students to submit video or audio assignments in Moodle
- enrich videos with questions, slides or links to other content
- create accessible captions for videos
- make light edits to videos after recording.
Key Kaltura tools in brief
Uploading a video
You can upload an existing video or audio file from your computer to Kaltura. To upload content, select + Add New and then Media Upload. The uploaded content is stored in your personal My Media library until it is published.
You can add basic information to the content, such as a name, description and licence information, before publication.

Kaltura Capture
Kaltura Capture is a separately installed recording application that allows you to record your screen, webcam and audio and combine them into the same video. Capture is well suited to tutorials, demonstrations, presentations and recordings of on-screen workflows. It also includes annotation and light editing features.
Use this tool when you want to record a PowerPoint presentation, create a tutorial video, demonstrate work steps on your screen or regularly produce recordings for teaching.

Express Capture
Express Capture is a lightweight browser-based recording tool. It allows you to quickly create a recording without installing a separate application. Express Capture is particularly suitable for quick webcam and screen recordings.
Use this tool when you want to create a short video quickly and do not need the more advanced features of Kaltura Capture.

Captions
In Kaltura, you can add captions to videos and transcripts to audio files. Captions improve accessibility and make videos easier to use, for example when audio cannot be played or when the viewer wants to follow the content as text.
Captions can be created manually or automatically using speech recognition and then reviewed and edited as needed.
Use captions when you want to make a video or audio recording more accessible and easier to follow.

Video Quiz
With Video Quiz, you can add questions to a video and engage viewers while they watch. Kaltura creates a separate quiz version based on the original video. This is particularly useful for learner engagement, reflection and checking understanding.
Use this tool when you want to add questions, self-assessment or light knowledge checks to a video.

Video Editor
With Video Editor, you can make small edits to videos uploaded to Kaltura, such as trimming unnecessary content from the beginning, end or middle of a recording. It is a lightweight post-production tool for situations where a separate video editing application is not needed.
Use this tool when you want to quickly tidy up a recording before publishing it.

Timeline and Hotspots
The Timeline and Hotspots features allow you to enrich videos. Timeline helps organise a video into sections and makes it easier to navigate to different parts of the content, while Hotspots allow you to add links or buttons on top of the video.
Use these tools when you want to make a video easier to navigate or direct viewers to additional materials.

Adding a YouTube video to Kaltura
You can also add a public YouTube video to Kaltura. The YouTube content then becomes part of your My Media library without the need to download and re-upload the video file.
Use this feature when you want to use a public YouTube video in teaching as part of other Kaltura content.

Using Kaltura on a mobile device
Kaltura can be used on a mobile device through a web browser. The interface automatically adapts to the screen size of the device.
You can also use Kaltura’s Kaltura MediaSpace GO mobile application, which is available for both Android and iOS devices.
When signing in for the first time, enter the address of HAMK’s Kaltura environment, kaltura.hamk.fi, in the application. You will then be redirected to HAMK single sign-on (SSO). On subsequent sign-ins, the SSO login window will open directly when you sign in to the mobile application.
The Kaltura MediaSpace GO mobile application does not include all the features available in the browser-based KMS service. With the mobile application, you can search for, watch and share videos. You can also record video with your mobile device or upload existing videos from the device to Kaltura. Basic video information and publishing settings can also be edited in the application.
How do I get started?
Start by exploring your My Media view. Upload an existing video or create a short test recording to see how content is stored in your personal media library.
Next, try adding the video to Moodle or publishing it in an appropriate location. Once you are familiar with the basic idea, you can start exploring Kaltura’s more advanced tools.
