    Tool selection

In Kaltura, you can create screen recordings with two tools: Express Capture, which works in the browser, and Kaltura Capture, which is installed separately.

Both can record your computer screen, microphone audio, and camera image, but they are suitable for slightly different situations. Express Capture is a lightweight and fast option when you want to make a recording directly in your browser without installing a separate program. Kaltura Capture is suitable for more versatile educational use when you want to, for example, annotate when capturing a screen or utilize automatic recognition of PowerPoint presentation slides to create navigation points in the recording (Kaltura interactive tools – Timeline). You can also use the Kaltura Capture tool without a network connection.

    Express Capture

Express Capture is Kaltura’s browser-based recording tool that allows you to make quick recordings without any installation. It is especially suitable for situations where you want to record video directly in the browser, for example with a camera, microphone or as a screenshot. The recording is transferred directly to Kaltura after recording, making the tool a smooth option for short and simple recordings.

    Use the tool when:

    • you want to make a quick recording without installing a program
    • record a short greeting at the beginning of the course or verbal feedback at the end
    • you are working on a shared or temporary device.

Please note that Express Capture does not work on iOS mobile devices.

    Kaltura Capture

Kaltura Capture is a separately installed screen recording application that allows you to record screen, audio, and webcam images in the same recording. It is suitable for producing educational materials and how-to videos that require more flexibility and more versatile features than the browser-based Express Capture offers. Kaltura Capture supports simultaneous recording of the computer screen, camera, and audio, annotation during recording, and automatic recognition of PowerPoint presentation slides and creation of searchable chapters for the recording (Kaltura interactive tools – Timeline).

    Use the tool when:

    • you want to record a PowerPoint presentation
    • make an educational or instructional video
    • Implement a pedagogically effective screen recording video

How to install Kaltura Capture on your computer

Kaltura Capture must be installed on your computer before use. The installation window appears when the tool is started for the first time by selecting Kaltura Capture from the Add New menu. The installation does not require root access to your computer.
