At HAMK, several tools are available for video post-production, and they suit different levels of need. Some are intended for quick basic editing, while others are designed for more demanding editing work. This page provides a concise overview of the video editing tools used at HAMK and what they are suitable for.

    Where should you start?

If you want an easy tool for your first editing tasks, Microsoft Clipchamp or ScreenPal is recommended. If the video has already been uploaded to Kaltura and you only want to cut out part of the recording, Kaltura Video Editor is the fastest option. If you need more versatile tools, the supported options are Adobe Premiere and DaVinci Resolve.

Where can you access the programs?

    • Microsoft Clipchamp – available on work computers as part of the M365 package (Win / Mac)
    • ScreenPal – the license is requested through a HelpDesk ticket; free for employees (Windows only)
    • Kaltura Video Editor – included in employees’ Kaltura license (Win / Mac)
    • DaVinci Resolve – can be downloaded to a work computer from Software Center (Win) and with the help of IT Helpdesk (Mac)
    • Adobe Premiere – installed by the user on their work computer from Adobe Creative Cloud (Win / Mac)

    Microsoft Clipchamp

Microsoft Clipchamp is a beginner-friendly video editor that can be used to record and compile videos in a browser or in the Windows application. It includes basic functions such as trimming, cropping, text, screen and webcam recording, captions, and AI-assisted features such as text-to-speech and background noise removal. It is well suited for quick basic editing of learning materials.

    Use the program when:

    • you want to edit videos as easily as possible
    • you are creating short teaching, communication, or social media videos
    • you need basic functions such as trimming and captioning tools

Windows users can find it through the operating system search field by searching for “Clipchamp”. Mac users can find it by logging in to their M365 account in a browser and looking for the application in the app menu.

    ScreenPal

ScreenPal is particularly well suited for editing screen recording videos and simple instructional videos. It can be used to record the screen and webcam video, trim video, and add text, images, graphics, music, and captions. The tool is designed for easy and quick use.

    Use the program when:

    • you want to edit a screen recording or instructional video
    • you need an easy tool for adding text, images, and narration
    • you want to produce instructional videos that are easy to update using the storyboard tool

    Less suitable when:

    • you need multitrack editing or extensive project management
    • you want to do demanding colour grading or audio post-production
    • you want to edit long teaching or meeting recordings, over 45 minutes

A ScreenPal license is requested through a HelpDesk ticket, after which the program is installed on your own computer. The program is available only for Windows workstations. See the instructions for installing and setting up the program:

    Kaltura Video Editor

Kaltura Video Editor is a lightweight browser-based editor for videos that have already been uploaded to Kaltura. It can be used to trim the beginning and end of a video and remove sections from the middle. It is suitable for quickly cleaning up lecture recordings and screen recordings.

    Use the program when:

    • you want to make a small correction to a video that has already been uploaded to Kaltura
    • you need a quick way to clean up the beginning, end, or middle section of a recording

The Kaltura video platform is available to all staff members. The application can be used through a browser at kaltura.hamk.fi (Kaltura MediaSpace) or in Moodle (Learn) course areas with the Kaltura plugin. The user account for Kaltura MediaSpace is created when the user logs in with SSO for the first time at kaltura.hamk.fi. With a temporary staff account, access to the tool is available only through Moodle.

    DaVinci Resolve

DaVinci Resolve combines video editing, colour grading, visual effects, and audio post-production. It is a versatile tool and suitable for demanding production, but it requires more learning than the previous tools and also a reasonably powerful laptop for smooth work.

    Use the program when:

    • you need many adjustment options for your video
    • you need versatile colour grading and audio post-production features
    • you are creating longer or visually polished videos

The application is available for Windows computers from Software Center, and IT Helpdesk can help Mac users install the application. The free version of the application is highly versatile. If even more advanced features are needed, the paid license can be purchased as a one-time purchase at a relatively affordable price.

    Adobe Premiere

Adobe Premiere is a versatile editing program for more demanding use. It can be used to cut and combine video precisely, manage audio on multiple tracks, add effects and titles, and use AI-assisted features. It is well suited for polished video production for teaching, communication, and marketing, but it requires more learning than the lighter tools. Like DaVinci Resolve, Premiere also requires a reasonably powerful laptop for smooth work.
