Open Broadcaster software, better known as OBS is an open source software, that can be used to record or stream the footage and sound from your computer. You can download OBS Studio to your work computer from the “Software Center” -icon (Windows users).

    Starting up and display capture

Start off by creating your first “scene”.

    OBS softwares main view.
You can find scenes from the bottom-left corner of the main view.

Continue by choosing a “source” for the scene by pressing the + icon. To record your screen, choose “display capture”.

You can add a source right next to the scenes.

Name your source with a descriptive name, so you can locate it easily in the future.

The view where you can name the source.

choose the display, you want to record if there are many. As a default OBS will usually detect the right resolution for your screen.

You can choose the display you want to record from the view shown in the picture.

    Audio capture

When you add an audio source into the software, it’s recommended to add filters to improve the sound quality.

The picture displays the menu that pops up when you right-click the audio source. You can find the filter menu by pressing the “filters” button

A good filter to add to your audio source is “Noise suppression”. It removes the ambient noise and therefore improves the sound quality. You can add the filters from the + icon located at the bottom-left corner.

The picture displays the noise suppression added to an audio source and where to find it.

    Settings

You can find the OBS settings from the bottom-right corner of the main view.

The location of the “settings” on the main view.

You can change the file of the recording to mp4 from the “recording format”-menu, that’s located in the “output”-menu of the settings. An mp4 file works better with programmes like Adobe Premiere.

The picture displays the output settings and where to change the recording format.

Make sure that the “base” and “output” resolutions are the same, from the “video”-menu.

    Recording

Start the recording by pressing “start recording” from the bottom-right corner of the main view and stop the recording by pressing “stop recording” from the same place. If you want to have multiple video sources in Teams or Zoom for example, use the “virtual camera”. You can find the virtual camera in Teams or Zoom in the “camera”-menu by the name of “OBS virtual camera” after you’ve turned on the virtual camera by pressing “start virtual camera” at the bottom-right of the OBS main view.

The picture displays the buttons for starting the recording and the virtual camera.

You can find the recorded videos from the “show recordings” button from the “file”-menu that is located at the top-left corner of the main view.

The “file”-menu found at the top-left corner of the main view.

You can also share multiple sources at once and switch to different scenes. For example, you can add a web-camera to the corner of the recording by adding a new source and choosing “video capture device”. You can switch the scenes around by choosing the preferred scene that you want to record and pressing “transition” at the middle of the main view.

The picture shows the web-cameras footage placed at the top-left corner of the display. This is a good option if you want to be able to show content from your computer while also showing your face.

    Recording file

The files can be converted to a different format by pressing “remux recordings”. You might need to do this if for example you have recorded the video as an mkv-file and you want it to be an mp4-file. First choose the recording file you want to convert and then choose the format you want it to be converted to. Then press the “remux”-button and OBS will convert the file to your preferred format.

“Remux recordings” is found from the same menu (file) as the “settings” and “show recordings”.
