    Hint: If you begin to suspect that a learner has used AI, you can ask them, for example, to explain the matter again in their own words

    Remember that no detection tool is perfect, and they may often produce false “positives” as well as fail to detect AI-generated text. As a teacher, you can also ask students to write about their own experiences and how these connect to what they have learned, as well as to reflect on their learning experiences with the subject. Make use of new articles on the topic in assignments. You can also ask them to evaluate AI-generated sample answers to the questions they have posed. You may ask students to create several drafts of their work, which they can use to review and improve their work with your guidance. This helps students understand that assignments are part of the learning process. It also limits the use of AI mainly to language-related assistance.

    In addition, it is useful to require students to use primary sources to support their claims, or ask them to write about recent events. You can assess students based on direct discussion and also use peer review tools. Tell students about the human value of learning and education, as well as the importance of learning expression. You can, for example, use real-time group tasks for this purpose.

    Tip: With the help of tools like Copilot, you can generate open-ended text and multiple-choice questions in Moodle’s quiz activity, based on the content of the essay a student has submitted. This way you can check whether the student has actually internalized the content they wrote — in other words, learned the subject — or whether the submitted content was possibly produced by generative AI without much reading or understanding.

    OpenAI discontinued the AI Classifier that detected AI-generated text, since they stated that texts produced by AI-based text generators cannot be reliably identified.

    This academic writing tool provides a feature for detecting possible AI use in English texts.

    Note! These tools may not yet be able to detect content created in Finnish. In general, the outputs of these tools are only probabilities, but they can help start a discussion with the student. (Detection requirements are in English.) Detection requirements (in English)

    In plagiarism detection systems, if the sources appear “non-alarming,” it may be worth checking whether the reason could be AI-invented sources (note: hallucinated information). For this reason, requiring sources and verifying their accuracy is extremely important.

    Also, in assignments, use Arene’s traffic light model to explain how AI is allowed to be used in completing the assignment. This is also available, for example, in Learn-Moodle as a template in the Atto editor for assignment instructions.
